The following organizations offer grants that can help institutions in the United States and territories meet their conservation goals. If you are aware of other agencies offering conservation assistance, please contact me and I will add them to this list.
Heritage Preservation
Administers the Conservation Assessment Program (CAP) for the Institute of Museum and Library Service (IMLS). CAP provides non-competitive grants to small and mid-sized museums and historic sites to fund conservation assessments of their facilities and collections.
American Association of Museums (AAM)
Administers the Museums Assessment Program (MAP) for the IMLS. MAP provides non-competitive grants to museums. These grants include the Collections Management Assessment, which provides funding for conservation surveys. The survey can include all aspects of collections management, including collections policies, planning, access, documentation and collections care.
National Endowment for the Humanities (NEH)
Preservation Assistance Grants provide funding up $5,000 for general Conservation Assessments as well as Conservation Plans addressing specific problems. Institutions which have already completed a Conservation Assessment or Plan, may apply for conservation supplies and furniture.
National Historic Publications and Records Commission
Funds projects that preserve documents (printed and electronic) significant to the history of the United States.
Getty Grant Program
Offers grants that fund architectural conservation, as well as conservation planning, collection surveys, research and treatment.
