Sampler, Betty Oliver, 1759
Medium: Multicolored silk threads
Construction: Plain weave linen ground fabric with hand hemmed edges. Edges are hand stitched to a light weight, plain woven, cotton fabric. The backed sampler is mounted on a wooden strainer, secured with iron tacks.
Condition before treatment: Overall dirt and discoloration, with waterstains on the bottom third. Colors are faded.
Treatment: Removed from strainer, retaining tacks. Stains reduced on the suction table, using distilled water. Tacking edges reinforced by stitching to light -weight washed cotton fabric. Tacks coated with acrylic resin. Strainer cleaned and covered with 4-ply alpha-cellulose matboard. Sampler remounted, using original tacks in original holes.
